Using What You Have ~ Pottery

Hello and welcome back! It’s been awhile… I’ve been keeping super busy but haven’t spent much time blogging what I’ve been doing. My time has mostly been spent celebrating birthdays as the month of May is filled with so many birthdays in our family and now that Luca (my grandson) is here, we get to keep celebrating right into June. Aside from celebrating, we’ve also been doing some gardening and trying to spruce up our backyard. I would love to utilize our spaces more. The one thing that I’ve put on the back burner is doing fun and creative projects for our home. I’ve made a concerted effort to make more time for that.

I’ve recently fallen in love with earthy looking pottery but didn’t want to spend the money on the pieces I’ve seen, therefore it was time to get creative.

I had the terra cotta pot on the right for a bajillion years and haven’t used it in awhile and the pot on the left was a pot that my mom had bought at Hobby Lobby awhile ago and no longer wanted.

These were perfect for what I was looking for. I started out by painting the pots with Mineral Paint in the color Putty. I used mineral paint for it’s adhesive quality but I could have also primed the pots before painting. Also, my goal was to use things that I already had.

After the paint dried, I mixed some unsanded grout with water. ( also something that I had from years long past when I was trying my hand at mosaic tiling.)

Now for the fun part…I smeared the grout mixture onto the pots using my hands. This added texture to the pots.

(Before)

Once the grout dried, I took a dry towel and rubbed the sides of the pots to knock down the sharp parts of the grout but still leaving the texture on the pots.

(After)

I also rubbed a little more in certain areas to reveal the painted color underneath.

When I was happy with look of the pot, I sealed it with a matte polyurethane.

After letting that dry, I used an antiquing finish to brush on here and there to give it more of an aged look.

That was it! It was super easy to do and took no time at all.

I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out and it didn’t cost me a thing! As a bonus, it was super therapeutic too which is just what I needed after such a busy month!

Thanks for stopping by Friends! It always means so much!

Great job! They look like expensive pieces you’d find somewhere. 😊
