From Studious To Stunning

Hello Friends and Happy Valentine’s Day! Are you itching to get outside yet? Yeah, me too. The weather has been teasing us with spring like weather but I’m not falling for it yet. I am looking forward to some warmer weather though when it comes to doing projects outside.

I received a text message from a friend of mine asking if I wanted a free desk…that needed some work. Those are two very tricky phrases that usually go hand in hand…”free” and “needs work.” I have to admit that I was intrigued.

It turned out that it was a desk that sat inside of a beauty shop. It was partially painted with chalk paint and was written on with hot pink chalk pen. The knobs were shiny gold and the top was covered with contact paper….I’ll take it!

I removed the contact paper from the top of the desk and tried to wash off the chalk pen but it didn’t want to budge. I decided to paint over the parts that were already painted to freshen it up and cover the hot pink. I also had to paint the side of the desk to match the other side that was painted.

I used GooGone to remove the tackiness from the contact paper on the top of the desk and wiped it down with mineral spirits.

Then I wiped over the wood parts with stain

and gave the painted parts a coat of matte finish polycoating.

There was something about the wood and black that gave it a glam vibe or maybe it was that I knew it came out of a beauty salon. Either way, I thought it would make a cute vanity. The good part about being a hoarder (and I use that term loosely) is that sometimes you have spare parts laying around.

I used a dresser in my kitchen for storage after giving it a paint job but I didn’t use the mirror that came with it. The mirror was a perfect match for the desk.

After attaching the mirror, I painted the knobs vintage brass color.

I love the way it turned out!

This is a picture of the vanity displayed in our shop so the lighting is a bit off.

It definitely has a vintage glam look and would be perfect as a vanity in a bedroom! If the mirror was removed, I think it would also make a very handsome desk!

Disclaimer: Someone else thought it made a great vanity/desk as well. It sold within a week of bringing it to the shop! I’m glad someone else saw the beauty in it as well! That’s my favorite part of my job!

Have a great week Friends! Thanks for stopping by!

Love,
