Grand Entrance

When My Guy and I had built our house many years ago, we chose not to have a sidewalk put in leading up to our front door. I had envisioned a quaint path made of stone to welcome our guests but I knew that it would take some time (and money) to complete the look.

After many years and much dreaming, we finally made it happen. First we had to do the prep work.

How do you like our vintage tiller? It works like a charm!

We drew out the shape and curve of the path. We then proceeded to dig up the grass and level off the ground.

Next we spread a shallow layer of sand across the path to create a smooth base to lay our stones on.

Now it was time to pick out our stones. It amazed me how many types and colors of stone there was to choose from.

After visiting several places, we decided on this beautiful gray stone. We have plans to repaint our home down the road so this will be a good color choice.

By the way, if you live in our local area, I highly recommend Soil Toppers. Also here is a link to their Facebook Page.

They are such helpful people and their selection of stone was great! Their customer service is out of this world!

Next came the fun part, piecing the stones together like a puzzle.

That was also the back breaking part.

There was a lot of lifting and shifting to make the stones come together and to make sure that they sat level.

Once they were placed to our liking, we filled the gaps with Polysweep polymeric sand by sweeping it into the cracks just about level with the stones. Polymeric sand is really cool. It goes on like sand and hardens like cement once you add water.

We also used our leaf blower at the lowest setting to remove the Polysweep from the tops of the stones.

Once the sand was cleared from the top of the stones, we lightly misted the stones allowing the sand to get wet and settle between the stones. We repeated the misting about 3-4 times. I should also add that we decided to edge our walkway with rocks for a more finished look.

We didn’t step on the walkway for a couple of days just to make sure it was cured.

Then it was time to doll up the place a bit.

We purchased some mulch and spread it in the flower bed.

I love the way the quaint path welcomes our guests to our home.

Now that it is complete, the only thing left to do is to stand back and enjoy our new grand entrance.
