Is Faking It Such a Bad Thing?

Is faking it such a bad thing? Um…well, that just depends on what we’re talking about…

Anyone who knows me, knows that I like “the real thing.” I like true antiques over replicas. I like cotton over synthetic. I like butter over margarine. It’s just who I am. However, depending on what we’re talking about, I’m not opposed to faking it once in a while.

Here’s a true story that my husband will kill me for telling but it makes me laugh every time and also proves my point.

One day my husband and I were shopping at our local Sam’s Club. We were browsing through the fun isles…you know the ones that don’t have food on them but have things that you didn’t know you needed until you saw them and then you come out with a food bill much higher than it would have been had you not gone down that isle? Anyhoo, I saw this really pretty purse that I just knew I needed for the summer and the price was not bad. I picked it up and inspected it carefully. It felt like leather and it looked like leather but I wasn’t sure.

As a side note, I should mention at this point that my husband and I are both members of the “Can’t See $h!+ Club.” You have to be middle-aged to be a member. There’s no initiation or membership dues either. You just wake up one day and you’re in.

So I asked my husband if he could read the tag on the purse to see what it was made out of. He proceeded to read the tag letting me know of its design and the slight imperfections that made it unique. He then goes on to tell me that it is made of the finest fox leather…which completely blew my mind since I didn’t even know that they made handbags out of fox leather…because they DON’T make bags out of fox leather…they do however make them out of “faux” leather.

faux : [foh] adjective

“a string of faux pearls”
not genuine; fake or false.

Note to self: bring glasses when shopping.

As much as I love the real thing, sometimes fake isn’t so bad. I love real flowers and houseplants but sometimes you just can’t beat some artificial ones. This time of year I crave the outdoors and greenery but my house plants are starting to look pitiful and there aren’t any flowers blooming in my yard. I know that I could buy some fresh flowers from the store but it’s not really in our budget since there are so many other projects that I want to save up for. That’s where the “fake” comes in. If you can spend a bit more on the real “looking” flowers, you will have them for years.

Last year, I had purchased these tulips from Michaels. I got them while they were on sale so it really wasn’t that bad. I think they look totally real!

I found this fern at Home Goods last fall. Not too bad.

There are some really great companies out there that offer realistic plants and flowers but there are also some really nice looking flowers at your local shops too. You just have to shop around.

These hydrangeas were purchased at Walmart from the Better Homes and Garden line several years ago.

I had gone to Michael’s last week and they had some artificial roses that not only looked real but felt real too.

Unbelievable! I didn’t get them and am slightly kicking myself but they weren’t on sale yet and I try to buy when things are on sale. I will totally kick myself if I go back and they are no longer there however.

So there you have it. I totally believe in being real as much as possible but sometimes faking it is not a bad thing.

I hope you have a wonderful week friends!
