That Just Frosts My Glass

Hey Friends! I’m back with a super easy and inexpensive way to get the look of frosted glass without using etching chemicals. You really can’t mess up and should you change your mind, it’s completely removable.

I used this method on our sidelight windows around our front door. I love the light that came in but I didn’t like that when someone knocked on the door, they would look in the windows and scare the bajeebus out of me. This method allows the light to still shine in but it frosts the glass so that you can’t see through it so no more peepers. I’ve had it up for well over ten years now and it has never bubbled or peeled.

The only supplies needed are:

  • clear contact paper
  • glass cleaner
  • paper towels
  • scissors
  • razor blade
  • squeegee (optional).

How to:

If you have mutton bars on your windows, remove them first.

  • Clean your glass thoroughly making sure there isn’t any grime or lint left behind. Measure the size of contact paper that you need and use the grid lines on the back for easy cutting.

If it’s not measured exactly, it’s okay because it can be trimmed with a razor blade once it’s applied.

  • Spray the glass that you are adhering the contact paper to with glass cleaner.
  • Start to peel the backing of the contact paper off starting at the top of the piece. Do not remove the entire backing yet.
  • Attach the adhesive side of the contact paper to the window starting at the top, making sure that the top corners line up.
  • Run your finger along the top of the contact paper.
  • Once it’s stuck, you can begin peeling the back of paper off in a downward motion while running your hand down the middle of the paper. The glass cleaner under the paper makes it super easy to push the air out from under the paper.

  • Using your hand or a squeegee, push the air bubbles out starting from the center and working your way to the edges. If you have a stubborn air bubble, you can lift the contact paper back up and push back down again.
  • Give the whole thing a wipe with the paper towel to catch any glass cleaner that seeped out.

If your cut was a little off, now is the time to clean it up by trimming around the frame of the glass.

That is it!!! This is a perfect solution for bathroom windows where a little privacy is needed and glass cabinets that might not be as organized as you would like…or for people who ring your doorbell and push their nose against the glass. Should you not like the look of it or change your mind later, simply peel the contact paper off and clean your glass with glass cleaner.

I hope this was helpful to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to get the look of etched glass.

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

Love,
