One Person’s Trash…

Hello everyone! I’m back with another redo! I know, I know….you’re surprised, right?

This story starts out some time ago. I was yard saling with my husband and my parents. As we searched yard sale after yard sale, we came upon a lady selling an entire dining room set complete with table, chairs and a china cabinet. The whole set would have been a great deal but required a lot of work. I also did not have the space to store all of it before getting the chance to work on it without kicking my husband’s car out of the garage. That’s our deal…I can’t collect so much that he gets the boot…sounds fair. Anyhow, it was the china cabinet that I fell I love with. (With a little TLC of course).

I loved the curvy lines on it and the glass doors on top. Although I don’t own fancy china to put in there, I pictured my collections of random things showcased in it.  I figured that if they were corralled in one place, it wouldn’t look so much like clutter. (A good excuse to collect, don’t ya think?)

The funniest thing happened. I asked the lady at the sale if she would sell the cabinet separate. She looked at the cabinet and then looked at me and said, “You really want to buy that cabinet?” Apparently she didn’t see the same potential that I saw. Needless to say, SCORE! She sold just the cabinet to me.

I lived with the cabinet in its original form for almost a year until I made up my mind on what I wanted to do with it. (I know, it took me long enough…) I’m not one to paint over wood if the original finish looks nice however something about the finish bugged me. It almost looked faded. And then my wheels started turning.

I started out by priming the cabinet to give the paint a good surface to stick to. Then I painted the inside of the cabinet a soft robin’s egg blue. I painted the outside of the cabinet a cottage white and scuffed up some of the edges to give it a worn look.  Then I finished it with a dark wax to soften it up a bit.

I am so pleased with the way it turned out.

My collection of things inside of the cabinet actually show up better and the cabinet itself doesn’t look so heavy. It looks fresh!

It just goes to show you that one person’s trash really is another person’s treasure.
