The Cabinet That Could…But Almost Didn’t

Hello, hello! How was your Fourth of July? I hope you enjoyed yours as much as I enjoyed ours!

Boy are we in the dog days of summer or what? I don’t know what the weather is like in your neck of the woods but we are hot and steamy here. Do you know that feeling of when you walk into a bathroom right after someone just got out of the shower? Well welcome to North Carolina! It makes working outside a bit of a challenge especially when working on refinishing furniture.

I’m always on the look out for furniture that needs a little loving for our shop and sometimes for myself if I’m being honest. I love the challenge of turning a dilapidated piece into something that could be treasured and used once again.

Speaking of a challenge. I found a cabinet that almost kicked my butt.

It really wasn’t the cabinet’s fault…just circumstances I suppose. It was the night before were getting ready to host a party when I sat down to take a break and look through a Buy, Sell, Trade site. I saw this little oak cabinet and sent a message asking if it were still available. She said yes but only if I picked it up tonight. Certainly I couldn’t pick it up tonight. It would be after 10:00 before I got there and we still had a lot to do to get ready for company. “Sure we could,” my husband said. So off we went.

We picked up the cabinet and I got to work on it later that week. I had purchased some off brand chalk paint to try on it since the finish was a bit rough and I didn’t think I could bring it back to it’s natural beauty.

Three coats of paint later and I could still see the wood showing through. Ugh! Why did I buy this??? On to plan B…home made chalk. If you missed that post, you can find the recipe on how to make it here. It worked like a charm.

After painting the cabinet, I sanded it a bit to give it a vintage worn look.I was going to put new hardware on the cabinet since I didn’t realize that one of the knobs was missing a wood piece but I didn’t have hardware that fit. Again, why did I buy this piece???

Time to get resourceful…I looked through my vintage button jars and wouldn’t you know it, I had a wooden button that fit perfectly into the knob! All it took was a little glue. The color of the wood was even an exact match.

So why did I buy this piece? Because I could even though everything said I couldn’t. It was a bit of challenge or maybe my attitude needed adjusting but I am happy that I got it now.

Have you had challenging projects that you just wanted to give up on? I’m glad I pushed through even thought I was ready to scrap the whole idea. It turned out to be a cute piece that will be given a new life.

Hope you all are having a great summer and staying cool!

I appreciate each and every one of you that stop by my little blog. It means the world to me!

Love,
